Octave Wins US Gr1 Coaching Club Oaks

Monday, 23rd July 2007

In the US, former Arrowfield Stud shuttler Unbridled's Song (Unbridled-Trolley Song, by Caro) added a Gr1 triumph when ultra-consistent daughter Octave (Unbridled's Song-Belle Nuit, by Dr Carter) made it 2 Gr1 victories in 3 weeks with a half-length win in the US$300,000 Gr1 Coaching Club American Oaks (10 furlongs) for 3YO fillies at Belmont Park in New York. Favourite Octave (ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher) defeated fast-finishing previously unbeaten Lear's Princess (Lear Fan-Pretty City, by Carson City) & Godolphin's Folk (Quiet American-Polish Style, by Danzig). This race was the 2nd leg of New York's prestigious Triple Tiara (a trio of Gr1 races for 3YO fillies) & having already won the 1st leg Gr1 Mother Goose Stakes (9 furlongs) at Belmont Park on June 30, Octave may now target the final leg Gr1 Alabama Stakes on August 18 at Saratoga. Prior to her latest twin Gr1 successes, Kenrucky-bred Octave had notched runner-ups in 4 Gr1 races: last season she won the Gr2 Adirondack Breeders' Cup Stakes & finished 2nd in both the Gr1 Matron Stakes & Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies; & this season she finished runner-up in the Gr2 Fair Grounds Oaks on March 10, Gr1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland on April 7 & Gr1 Kentucky Oaks at Chruchill Downs on May 4, before the Gr1 Mother Goose victory. Overall she now boasts 4 wins & 6 runner-ups from 10 starts for US$1,227,934 earnings.
