1st Winner For NZ Freshman Sire Pyrus

Wednesday, 11th July 2007

Former NZ Westbury Stud shuttler Pyrus (Mr Prospector-Most Precious, by Nureyev) notched his 1st winner when 2YO gelding Slah (Pyrus-Small Parcels) scored over 1200m at Awapuni for trainer Rachel Frost. Westbury home-bred Slah (who now has a win & 3 placings from 6 starts) "was bought for NZ$9,500 by owners Jim Freeman & his son Dave after being passed-in at the NZB Yearling Sales at Karaka," reported nzracingnews.co.nz. Gr2-winner Pyrus (who stood for NZ$5,000+GST in 2006) "served his 1st season at Westbury Stud in 2003, but hasn't returned to the Karaka farm this year". Westbury studmaster Russell Warwick commented: "We still own half of him but we didn't bring him down for this season. In reality, he hasn't had the numbers & without the mares it's hard to get the winners. It's a costly exercise to get him here." Warwick added there was "still a possibility Pyrus could return in the future," noting: "We'll wait & see how they do as spring 3YOs." Pyrus is based at the Ballyhane Stud in Ireland (where he stands alongside current Westbury shuttle stallion Captain Rio).
