Soldier Of Fortune Wins Gr1 Irish Derby

Monday, 2nd July 2007

In Ireland overnight, Coolmore shuttler Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) was responsible for a significant Gr1 winner when colt Soldier Of Fortune (Galileo-Affianced, by Erin's Isle) smashed his rivals in the Gr1 Irish Derby (12 furlongs) for 3YOs at the Curragh. Coming home panels clear Soldier Of Fortune, ridden by Seamie Heffernan for Aidan O'Brien, officially scored by 9-lengths and a short-head, respectively, from stablemates and fellow sophomore colts Alexander Of Hales (Danehill-Legend Maker, by Sadler's Wells) & Eagle Mountain (Rock Of Gibraltar-Masskana, by Darshaan). Soldier Of Fortune had finished 5th in the Gr1 Epsom Derby in England (where Eagle Mountain was runner-up), but with the soft conditions he was backed in from 7/1 to 5/1. According to racingpost.co.uk, the Ballydoyle 1-2-3 is the 4th time the stable has "filled the first three places in an Irish Classic."
