Darley Newcomer 4: Star Danehill Sprinter Gonski

Thursday, 1st March 2007

Gonski (Danehill-Abonnement, by Marauding) was bred by Adam Sangster's Swettenham Stud & purchased by Tim Martin for $400,000 at the 2004 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney. He won on debut at Rosehill in December that year with a performance given a rating of 118 (no debutant by Danehill has ever been rated so highly & the only southern hemisphere Danehill colts rated higher as 2YOs were Redoute's Choice, Untouchable, Exceed And Excel & Fastnet Rock). As a 3YO Gonski won the Listed Concept Stakes (1410m) with a dominating front-running display that earned a 120-rating before being purchased by Darley; a fractured sesamoid in the build-up to his 2006 spring preparation forced his early retirement with 2 wins & 2 placings (also including the Listed JRA Stakes over 1200m) from 8 starts for $185,630 prize-money.
