Jambalaya Wins US Gr1 Gulfstream BC Turf

Monday, 26th February 2007

In the US, former Vinery shuttler Langfuhr (Danzig-Sweet Briar Too, by Briartic) added a Gr1 triumph when Canadian-bred 5YO gelding Jambalaya (Langfuhr-Muskrat Suzie, by Vice Regent) snatched victory by a neck in the US$300,000 Gr1 Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Turf (11 furlongs on turf) for 4YOs & up in Florida. Jambalaya (ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer Catherine Day-Phillips) defeated favoured Gr1-winning 6YO mare Honey Ryder (Lasting Approval-Cuando Quiere, by Affirmed) & Brazilian-bred 5YO entire Einstein (Spend A Buck-Gay Charm, by Ghadeer) who won this race last year. Jambalaya (purchased for just US$2,500 at the 2003 Keeneland September sale) took his record to 6 wins (also including 2006's Listed Singspiel Handicap over 12 furlongs at Woodbine in Canada & 2005's Gr3 Saranac Stakes over 9.5 furlongs at Saratoga, as well as Canada's Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine) & 6 placings (including last start's Gr3 Canadian Turf Handicap over 8.5 furlongs at Gulfstream Park On February 3) from 17 starts for US$799,793 earnings.
