Jockey Arrested & Race Declared Void
Following sensational scenes at the track (owners & members rushing into the weighing room shouting "null & void", 1 owner punching the jockey & besieged stewards opening an enquiry) & subsequent headlines across India, police have arrested jockey Raju Singh, 20, "on charges of allegedly slowing down his horse at the Mahalaxmi racecourse" in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), reported The Hindu newspaper. Police announced Singh (who rode favourite Mazan, which finished 3rd in the Khaalis Plate) was arrested "following a complaint lodged by the racecourse authorities" & noted: "With the intention that his horse must not win, Raju Singh pulled the reins of his horse causing losses to those who had placed bets on the horse & the owner & trainer.'' Meanwhile the Royal Western India Turf Club "had suspended the jockey following allegations of race-fixing & declared the race null & void". Our spy on the scene added these juicy tidbits: "Mazan opened odds-on favourite & closed 2-1: most in-the-know punters didn't touch it & backed the winner. The stewards (who are voted in by the members) opened an enquiry & the apprentice jockey confirmed he was told to stop the horse, but is too frightened to say who told him to. The stewards announced they'd declared the race void to teach the person who told the jockey to stop the horse a lesson!"
