UK Doncaster: $780k Generous Gelding

Monday, 5th February 2007

In the UK, trainer Tony Martin out-bid Michael Dale (speaking by telephone to one of Paul Nicholls's owners) & paid top price of 300,000 guineas (A$780,000) for 3YO gelding Pires (Generous-Kaydee Queen, by Bob's Return) during the Horses-In-Training section at Doncaster Bloodstock's January Sale. Pires (consigned by a partnership from West Ilsley Stables) is out of a half-sister to Nigel Twiston-Davies's smart performer Queen Of Spades. Pires was a Redcar maiden winner last season for Mick Channon, then runner-up in the Listed Winkfield Stakes at Ascot before finishing 5th in the Washington Singer Stakes at Newbury in August at his most recent start. Martin told racingpost.co.uk: "He's been bought by an existing owner, but the horse may be divided up into a partnership." His former NZ Glenmorgan Farm & Westbury Stud shuttle sire Generous (Caerleon-Doff The Derby, by Master Derby) is standing the 2007 Northern Hemisphere season at Scarvagh House Stud in Ireland.
