Willy Smith Wins NZ Gr1 Wellington Cup

Monday, 29th January 2007

In New Zealand, Windsor Park Stud's champion sire of the last 5 seasons Volksraad (Green Desert-Celtic Assembly, by Secretariat) added a Gr1 triumph when 5YO gelding Willy Smith (Volksraad-Sound Lear, by Sound Reason) finished strongly down the outside to grab victory by a half-neck in the NZ$300,000 Gr1 Wellington Cup (3200m) at Trentham. Willy Smith (ridden by Matthew Cameron for trainer Mark Todd) defeated the 4YO mares Mirkola Lass (Prized-Gun Lady, by Guns Of Navarone) & Everswindell (Align-Hilarion Lady, by St Hilarion). Willy Smith (a NZ$38,000 yearling at the 2003 NZB Select Colts Sale) took his record to 6 wins & 8 placings (including his previous 2 starts earlier in January in the Gr3 Trentham Stakes over 2400m at Trentham & Gr2 City Of Auckland Cup over 2400m at Ellerslie) from 26 starts.
