In New Zealand, tragedy struck last start Gr1-winning 5YO Mikki Street (Cape Cross-Ocean Pearl, by Crested Wave) when he had to be euthanased "after cruely shattering a back leg in training at Awapuni yesterday morning," reported thoroughbrednews.co.nz. The Lisa Latta-trained galloper was having his final serious workout before contesting Saturday's NZ$200,000 Gr1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham. Mikki Street (a NZ$61,000 yearling at the 2003 NZB Select Colts Sale at Karaka) won the Gr1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on December 26 to take his record to 6 wins (also including the 2006 Gr3 Winter Cup over 1600m at Riccarton Park) & 9 placings (including the 2006 Gr3 Merial Metric Mile over 1600m at Awapuni, Listed Savabeel Marton Stakes over 1600m at Awapuni & Listed Postponed Anzac Handicap over 1600m at Awapuni, plus the 2005 Listed Mason Appliances Stakes over 1400m at Pukekura) from 28 starts.
