Stewards Withdraw Carte Diamond From Melb Cup
Racing Victoria stewards yesterday officially withdrew English stayer Carte Diamond from the Gr1 Melbourne Cup "on the advice of 4 separate veterinarians": RV Director of Veterinary Services Dr John McCaffrey, President of the Equine Veterinary Association Dr Barry Smyth, RV vet Dr Geoff Hazard & (on the request of Carte Diamond's trainer Brian Ellison) Dr Brian Anderson at Ballarat Veterinary Clinic. They found the horse's "right front superficial digital flexor tendon to be swollen, painful on palpation & exhibiting significantly more heat when compared to the other front leg"; the vets also "performed an ultrasound, which identified a significant core lesion in the horse's tendon". The veterinarians agreed "the tendon's structural integrity was such that its biomechanical strength was significantly impaired & the injury is not capable of healing prior to the running of the Melbourne Cup"; as a result, all agreed "there would be an unacceptably high risk of the horse breaking down if the horse were to participate in this race".
