VRC Wins 2006 Governor of Victoria Export Award
The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has won the 2006 Governor of Victoria Export Award in the Sports, Events & Tourism category. The announcement was made by the Governor of Victoria, Prof David de Kretser. VRC Chief Executive Dale Monteith said yesterday the Club and staff were honoured by the accolade, noting it "emphasises the important role that Flemington and the Melbourne Cup Carnival play in the fabric of Victorian society in so many ways, as well as lifting racing in the minds of millions of people around Australia - and now the world." An independent economic survey calculated that last year's Melbourne Cup Carnival generated a $318 million benefit to the Victorian economy - over 50% more than the next most important event, the Australian Tennis Open. Other features of the carnival were:
- It attracted more than 380,000 patrons over the four days - an attendance increase of more than 50% on 10 years ago and 30,000 of those were international visitors
- The race was televised to 170 countries and viewed by an audience of more than 700 million.
