Multiple Gr1 Winner Soviet Song Retired

Tuesday, 10th October 2006

The 5-time Gr1-winning 6YO mare Soviet Song (Marju-Kalinka, by Soviet Star) has been retired to stud after connections decided not to run her in this weekend's UK Gr1 Champion Stakes at Newmarket, following a "lack-lustre weekend workout" reported racingpost.co.uk. Soviet Song (owned by the 18,000 members of the Elite Racing Club & trained by James Fanshawe) began her Gr1-winning spree as a 2YO in the 2002 Gr1 Fillies' Mile & followed with victories in the 2004 Gr1 Sussex Stakes, Gr1 Matron Stakes & Gr1 Falmouth Stakes, plus the Gr1 Falmouth Stakes again in 2005. This season she won the Gr2 Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot & finished her career with runner-ups in both the Gr1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in August & Gr1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on September 30. Overall she recorded 9 wins from 24 starts for £1,168,370 (A$2.8m) prize-money.
