Maryland Yearlings Day-3: Average Down 6%

Friday, 6th October 2006

Cumulatively over the 3 days of the Maryland Sale, 658 yearlings sold for a record US$14,580,700 (up 0.6% on last year's 615 sold for US$14,499,600). However the US$22,159 cumulatively average was down 6% (last year US$23,577) though the US$11,500 cumulative median was up 9.5% (last year US$10,500). Fasig-Tipton chief operating officer Boyd Browning told thoroughbredtimes.com: "Overall you're pleased when you establish a record gross & a near record average & median. This morning, I looked back where this sale has been: in 2003 the gross was US$8.3 million; in 2004 it was US$10.7 million; & in 2005 it was US$14.5 million. So it's kind of stabilised. You can't continue to have expanding numbers & expanding averages forever. The upward trend seems to have plateaued for the time being."
