Murtajill Wins Breeders Plate

Tuesday, 3rd October 2006

Coolmore shuttler Rock Of Gibraltar (Danehill-Offshore Boom, by Be My Guest) recorded a juvenile black-type success with his very 1st runner in Australia when record-priced colt Murtajill (Rock Of Gibraltar-Skating, by At Talaq) smashed the race record with a 1.5-lengths victory in the $80,000 Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) for 2YO colts & geldings at Randwick. Despite starting from a wide barrier, Murtajill (ridden by Jim Cassidy for trainer Tim Martin) clocked 57sec (0.8sec inside the previous record) to defeat favoured colt Husson Lightning (Hussonet-Snip Snip, by Snippets) & fellow colt Maxisun (Choisir-Venere, by Marscay). Murtajill was the highest-priced weanling ever sold in Australasia when Tim Stakemire (Australian agent for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum) paid $660,000 at the 2005 Magic Millions June National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast. Murtajill (a half-brother to former stakes-winning juvenile & Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Bradbury's Luck) is 1 of 6 winners from Gr1-winning mare Skating; the others include Sydney stakes-winner Sunset Run & stakes-performers Dubai Ice, Tordean & Skates. Skating won 7 races overall (including both the Gr1 Doncaster Handicap & Gr1 Winfield Classic) & earned over $1.1 million prize-money.
