Viva Pataca Wins Gr1 HK Derby

In Hong Kong yesterday, former Collingrove shuttler Marju (Last Tycoon-Flame Of Tara, by Artaius) added a Gr1 triumph when Viva Pataca (Marju-Comic, by Be My Chief) scored a 1.75-lengths victory in the HK$14 million (A$2.3m) Gr1 HK Derby (2000m) for 4YOs at Sha Tin. Viva Pataca (ridden by Christophe Soumillon for expatriate Australian trainer John Moore) defeated Australian-bred Hail The Storm (Metal Storm-Sound Willie, by Sound Reason) & Silver Sun (Scenic-Timeless Tenby, by Tenby). UK-bred Viva Pataca (owned by Macau casino magnate Stanley Ho) raced previously as Comic Strip & 3rd-placed Silver Sun raced previously as Nic Of Time. Viva Pataca had been among the early Derby favourites following previous wins over 1600m at Sha Tin.
