Tuesday, 7th February 2006

In Kansas, 44 thoroughbreds & quarterhorses "are believed to have perished in a barn fire at Eureka Downs," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. No humans were injured in the blaze, which destroyed a 90-stall barn built in 1989. Greenwood County Sheriff Mark Kenneson commented: "I'm not sure if they got it under control or it just burned down. It burned so quick. Within an hour, it was extinguished.'' Eureka Downs vice chairman Richard Clasen added: "As far as what started it: no way to know." Eureka Downs (an hour west of Wichita in Kansas) is a year-round training facility that will run a 20-day mixed meet starting on May 6.
