Monday, 21st November 2005

Pensioned Gainsborough Farm stallion Shadeed (winner of England's 1985 Gr1 2000 Guineas & sire of 3 Northern Hemisphere classic winners) has been euthanased in Kentucky aged 23 "due to complications from illness" reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Shadeed (Nijinsky II-Continual, by Damascus) sired 1991 English Gr1 1000 Guineas winner Shadayid, 1993 English Gr1 1000 Guineas winner Sayyedati & Canada's 1992 Gr1 Queen's Plate Stakes winner Alydeed (who also finished 2nd in the US Gr1 Preakness Stakes & went on to be Canada's leading sire in 2001). On the track himself, Shadeed was a juvenile stakes-winner & then as a 3YO won England's Gr3 Craven Stakes, Gr1 2000 Guineas & Gr2 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes before ending the season & his career with a 3rd in the 1985 US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Mile. Italian high-weight juvenile filly Free Thinker emerged from his 1st crop in 1990 & "in each of the next 3 years, at least 1 of his foals scored a classic victory". Overall Shadeed is the sire of 211 winners (15 stakes-winners) from 356 starters in 19 crops of racing who have earned US$13,665,814.
