Umbula Wins Cathay Cup

Blue Gum Farm stallion Umatilla (Miswaki-Dancing Show, by Nijinsky) added a major group winner when 6YO gelded stayer Umbula (Umatilla-Pleasure Island, by Century) scored a front-running victory in the $300,000 Gr2 Cathay Pacific Airways Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley. Umbula (ridden by Noel Callow for trainer Mick Price) held on to defeat 6YO mare Bazelle (Zabeel-Show Games, by Showdown) & 6YO entire Kindjhal (Ashkalani-En Public, by Rainbow Quest). Umbula (a $55,000 yearling at the 2001 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale) now has 10 wins & 15 placings in 42 starts for $468,250 prize-money. After the run, Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter penalised Umbula 1.5kgs (taking her weight up to 51kgs) for the Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on Tuesday November 1.
