1,000 Wins To US Jockey Bejarano

Tuesday, 18th October 2005

US jockey Rafael Bejarano landed his 1,000th career winner when 3YO filly Northern Vacation won by 3.5-lengths over 6 furlongs at Keeneland, reported thoroughbredtimes.com. The 23-year-old native of Peru was US leading jockey by wins in 2004 with 455 & was an Eclipse Award finalist. Bejarano (who reached the milestone in just his 4th season riding professionally in North America) declared: "Wow! It's come up so quickly. I still remember riding my first winner not so long ago. Now it is time to start over. I hope I can ride for another 40 years & maybe catch Laffit Pincay's record." Bejarano has amassed 66 stakes triumphs & 23 graded wins (including last year's Gr1 Stephen Foster Handicap & Gr1 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity, as well as the recent Gr1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes & last weekend's Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes) in his 4-year career.
