STAR TURN (AUS)(Star Witness-Golden Delicious, by Made of Gold)
Vinery Stud, NSW. Fee: $16,500 Live Foal Terms

Star Turn Overview

Star Turn arrived with a bang when his first-crop yearlings averaged over 10 times his covering fee and sold up to 25 times fee at the 2020 Gold Coast Magic Millions. He had 14 yearlings sell for six-figures in 2020 and they were targeted by our leading trainers with the Team Hawkes going to $550,000 for his top-priced colt (x Dukemore) in January.

“We have been thrilled with how Star Turn was received at the sales this year,” Vinery General Manager Peter Orton said. “The colt John Hawkes purchased on the Gold Coast is a testament to the type of horse he’s producing; they’re very forward and athletic - just like Star Turn who was also a standout yearling.”

Star Turn won in November of his juvenile season and that wasn’t surprising given his precocious pedigree. He is by Gr.1 Blue Diamond-winning Star Witness, who won 3 of his 4 juvenile starts and is from multiple Stakes-winning sprinter Golden Delicious.

Team Hawkes brought him back as a spring 3yo to defeat Golden Slipper winner Capitalist in the San Domenico Stakes Gr.3. Sent to Melbourne for the carnival, he showed another brilliant burst of acceleration to defeat older horses at weight-for-age in the Schillaci Stakes Gr.2.

He signed off with a credible third in the Gr.1 Coolmore Stud Stakes. Star Turn retired in 2017 following a three-start Autumn campaign highlighted by Group 1 WFA placings in some of Australia’s premier sprints; Lightning Stakes, Newmarket Hcp and William Reid Stakes.

An excellent outcross option, he has received phenomenal support from breeders, with full books in his first three seasons at stud.

Vinery Bloodstock Manager Adam White said he’s repeatedly getting positive feedback from breakers, pre-trainers and trainers saying that his stock will definitely go early.  “I guess they say that about nearly all the new sires,” White said. “But it’s justified with Star Turn.”

Bloodstock agent Bevan Smith is one such supporter. “We couldn’t be more impressed with our Star Turn – Spoleto colt. He’s highly intelligent, hasn’t put a foot wrong and is a horse that always wants to please. He also has a lovely, fluent stride and all his riders comment that he has a nice action and gives a good feel” Smith said.

Besides his expensive colt at the Gold Coast Magic Millions, the Star Turns sold to $180,000 (Inglis Melbourne Premier) and $140,000 (Inglis Classic). There were also bargains like the Adelaide Magic Millions colt from Red Chilli Peppers that cost trainer Will Clarken $75,000.

“We marked this colt as the most forward yearling on the sales ground,” Clarken reported. “We’re really excited to secure him and he will be up and running in no time.”

Vinery Stud stands Star Turn for a ‘Payment on Live Foal’ service fee of $16,500 (inc. GST).

  • Derby Possibility for Dark Destroyer

    Mon, 6 Dec 2021

A downgrade in the Matamata track due to persistent rain on the day played right into the hands of local runner Dark Destroyer as the promising galloper delivered a gritty victory in the day’s feature event, the Gr3 Mitchell Family Bonecrusher Stakes. Sent out a warm $2 favourite after the late scratching of his well-fancied stablemate Karman Line due to the downgrade from a Dead4 to a Slow8 track surface, the Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained son of Rich Hill Stud stallion Proisir (Choisir) showed plenty of heart as he dug deep to defeat fellow 3YOs Whiskey (Burgundy) and La Bella Beals (Star Turn) in a slogging finish to the contest. “He holds a nomination for the New Zealand Derby, but we want to sit down and talk with David about what his thoughts are and we won’t be making any decisions until we’ve done that.” O’Sullivan told NZ Racing Desk. “We had to take a longer-term view with her (Karman Line) as we didn’t want her finishing near the back after having a real gut buster." Raced by well-known owner David Archer under his Archer Equine Investments banner, Dark Destroyer is out of the All American mare All Can Party and has now won two of his five starts while also finishing third in the Gr2 James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes.

  • Star Turn Galloper Stuns Punters

    Fri, 19 Nov 2021

Astrologer (Star Turn-Fast ‘n’ Witty, by Fastnet Rock) left punters reeling when he flew home to win over 1000m at Happy Valley on Wednesday night and paid $134, reports scmp.com. It was the biggest boilover since Amazing Star (Darci Brahma-Bright Abyss, by Royal Academy) won the Gr2 Sprint Cup at $179 back in April. “I suppose it’s that time of the year, Christmas is coming,” trainer Douglas Whyte quipped. “He ran with a bit of credit last week and Keith (Yeung) jumped off and said he gave him a good feel. He’s backed up and really hit the line strongly.” It was Astrologer’s second career win, having previously won a 2YO race in Sydney prior to being exported to Hong Kong where he was having just his second start. A $300,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, the son of Vinery's exciting young sire Star Turn (Star Witness) ran third on debut as a 2YO behind future Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Shaquero (Shalaa). Fellow Whyte-trained stablemate and $2.90 favourite Harmony Fire (Brazen Beau-Ms Mazetti, by Lonhro) was runner-up behind Astrologer. “Harmony Fire deserved to win tonight. Zac [Purton] gave him a perfect ride,” said Whyte whose training career is progressing very solidly. “When he headed for home it looked like he was going to win easily, but the weight difference told and played into my other horse’s hands.”

  • Kendrick Has Six Chances To End Metro Slump

    Wed, 17 Nov 2021

All eight of trainer Stu Kendrick's last winners were at the provincials, and while he's leading the Queensland Provincial Trainer's Premiership, he wants to improve his metro record, reports racingqueensland.com.au. "It's all about placing horses," Kendrick said. "I've got a lot of handy horses that are winning at the provincials but there's no use taking them to the city to run a game fourth when they can win at the provincials. I've got a lot of my good 3YOs coming back for the summer so hopefully things will pick up soon." Kendrick will bring a team of six runners to Doomben's meeting today and is confident Maximum Output (All Too Hard-Max It Out, by Northern Meteor) and Carribean King (Sweynesse-Saint Martins, by Darci Brahma) will be his most competitive. "Both of mine have got good chances after they ran second at their last starts," Kendrick said. "Maximum Output was a bit unlucky last time when he got bumped on the turn which put him out of stride. Once he got balanced up again, he hit the line well and they've got a big opinion of Toby's horse that beat us." Kendrick also has Brazetti (Brazen Beau-Ms Mazetti, by Lonhro) and Avolonte (Star Turn-Testa Sarah, by Testa Rossa) in Race five; in Race seven Lion's Tooth (Redoute's Choice-Joyeuse, by King's Best) joins Carribean King, while Square Dance (Better Than Ready-Yankee Hoedown, by Encosta de Lago) will run in race eight.

  • Red Hot Favourite Rolled in Hong Kong

    Tue, 9 Nov 2021

Nervous Witness (Star Witness-Hadiklaim, by War Pass) become just the second horse since the year 2000 to get beaten as a $1.10 favourite in Hong Kong on Sunday, reports scmp.com. The other was Sacred Kingdom (Encosta de Lago) who finished second in the Centenary Sprint Cup in January 2008. "I'm in a bit of a state of shock," trainer David Hayes said. "Zac said he felt lethargic when it was time to go, maybe the gut-buster took more out of him than we thought." Nervous Witness finished third, with the win going to Cordyceps Six (Star Turn-Sandcastles, by Hinchinbrook) who, somewhat ironically, is by a son of the sire of Nervous Witness. "We kind of spoilt the party with the favourite, I've seen very few horses at that price since I've been in Hong Kong," Cordyceps Six's trainer Richard Gibson said. "We always had the advantage of the rail with this horse and I think in any normal Class Three race I would feel we would have a good chance from this position (barrier nine), but he's improved a lot since his last win. You're never confident against a horse that's $1.1 favourite – we've been reading great things about the favourite for a long time, so to win so easily is a feather in the horse's cap."

  • Bell Sells Key Duo on Inglis Digital

    Fri, 15 Oct 2021

Two Hawkes Racing-consigned gallopers, offered on behalf of Alan Bell Racing, have topped the Inglis Digital October (Early) Online Sale, with the talented Overmann (Hinchinbrook-Zakayla, by Aqlaam) bound for Hong Kong and recent maiden winner Saskatoon (Star Turn-Berry Delicious, by Blevic) to continue for the stable for Seymour Bloodstock. Overmann, a lightly-raced 3YO by Hinchinbrook, was purchased by Jason Leung Bloodstock for $330,000, a result which delighted Bell. "Every time I've sold with the Inglis Digital platform, I've been very pleased," Bell said. "This is the first time I've offered a Hong Kong-qualified horse on the site, one that was suitable and capable to be competitive over there and it's a significant moment for Inglis Digital, it gives more options to Hong Kong buyers." It was the first time Leung has bid with Inglis Digital, let alone purchased and while the countdown caused some stressful moments, he called it a "wonderful experience"." He advised, "Overmann will be racing in Hong Kong, he's a big strong horse, very reliable and he had beaten Volcanic Rock, which is solid form." Overmann becomes the twenty-fifth horse overall to sell for $300,000 or more on the platform. Fellow Bell-offered 3YO Saskatoon (Star Turn) was bought by Mark Pilkington Management for $200,000, following an exciting maiden win at Cranbourne on September 23.

    Fri, 8 Oct 2021

Five of the eight runners accepted for this Saturday's Listed Hill Smith Stakes over 1800m at Morphettville also hold Gr1 VRC Derby nominations, reports racingsa.com.au. The Price-Kent trained Jungle Magnate (Tarzino-The Love of Money, by Casino Prince) is one such horse, as is Travis Doudle's Max Fire (Star Turn-Witwatersrand, by Unfuwain) who has won his last two starts. Danny O'Brien's Man of Heart (Reliable Man-Cardiac, by Encosta de Lago) holds a Derby nomination, while his filly Blackcomb (Vancouver-Rocha, by Encosta de Lago) is nominated for both Derby and Oaks. Freedman trained Cerberus (Dundeel-Scarlet Moretta, by Fastnet Rock) is the other horse in the Hill Smith field with a VRC Derby nomination and he has also been nominated for maidens at Cranbourne and Benalla on Friday as options if he doesn't run on Saturday. The early favourite with the TAB is the 3YO filly Blackcomb who is still maiden in four starts but has run second to Rhinoceros (Vadamos-Hot in Pink, by Lonhro) and Barb Raider (Rebel Raider-Graebarb, by Host) in her last two starts.

  • Coolangatta's Half Sibling Chasing Unbeaten Status

    Wed, 6 Oct 2021

Delivering the goods on debut when scoring by just under half a length to take the prize at Nowra, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained-Snitzonfire (Snitzel-Piping Hot, by More Than Ready) heads to Rosehill this Wednesday to contest the second race of the day, the Vinery Stud Handicap  (1300m) in an attempt to remain unbeaten. The year older half-brother to impressive Gr3 Gimcrack Stakes debut winner Coolangatta (Written Tycoon), who has since been installed as the early favourite for the 2022 Gr1 Golden Slipper, Snitzonfire is considered an outsider in the market, but with the experience of a win under his belt, the gelding should improve from his debut and with Tim Clark in the saddle, he should get a good run throughout. The current race favourite is the James Cummings-trained Depiction (Exceed And Excel-Illustrate, by Street Cry), who races second time out of an impressive debut victory while the Chris Waller trained Headliner (Star Turn-Sanaya, by More Than Ready) did finish second on debut behind subsequent l G1 Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) and it would be no surprise to see the Star Thoroughbreds' raced filly improve first-up from a break.

  • Startantes Form Gives Ahooshu a Boost

    Fri, 1 Oct 2021

Trainer Graeme Green hopes the form around Startantes (Star Turn-Funtantes, by Easy Rocking) will hold up as he aims for his first city winner with Ahooshu (Better Than Ready-Tranquillity Base, by General Nediym) at Doomben on Saturday, reports racingqueensland.com.au. "Startantes is running in the Gr1 Flight Stakes in Sydney on Saturday so I'm hoping the form stacks up," Green said. "They were 2YOs when they met at Doomben last time and we were at the end of our campaign when Ahooshu ran third to her. Startantes has really stepped up to the mark since then and my bloke has also improved a lot but I'm not sure by how much." Ahooshu has won his last three runs in succession; two of those this season as a 3YO. "He ran good time over 1100 metres in Townsville and he drops 2.5kgs," Green said. "Chris (Whiteley) didn't knock him about when he won last time and said he could have easily won by a bigger margin. It was a gutsy effort considering he did a few things wrong. I'll play it by ear for the time being but he could go for a break after this and come back for the Jewel in March. He ran second to Sweet Dolly in The Jewel this year and I'm not sure if Sweet Dolly is headed that way as well." The QTIS Jewel 3YO Stakes is worth $500,000 and is run in the autumn.

  • Frankel Filly Chasing Flight Stakes Win

    Fri, 1 Oct 2021

Won in the past by a plethora of high-class race fillies, the Mark Newnham-trained Von Trapp (Frankel-Chortle, by Dubawi) will be aiming to join the illustrious honour roll when she lines up in Saturday's Gr1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick as one of the most inexperienced in the field. A winner two starts back at Hawkesbury over 1300m, the filly stepped up to the 1400m of the Gr2 Furious Stakes last time out, and despite her outsider odds, finished in fourth position, just over two lengths behind winner Four Moves Ahead (Snitzel-Doulmera, by Mr. Greeley), who she will once again meet in the $750,000 fillies feature race. Out of a winning-sister to Dubawi's triple Gr1 winner Hunter's Light (see below) from the family of Darley's Champion 2YO & 3YO Colt Too Darn Hot (Dubawi), a victory by Formosa-bred and raced Von Trapp will add considerable worth to the already valuable filly. Race favourite Startantes (Star Turn-Funtantes, by Easy Rocking) will be backing up from her sixth last Saturday behind In The Congo (Snitzel) in the Gr1 Golden Rose (1400m), while many other runners in the field are coming through the first three legs of the Darley Princess series.

  • Dominant Day for Apprentice Price

    Tue, 28 Sep 2021

Apprentice jockey Ben Price dominated Morphettville on Saturday with four winners, reports racingsa.com.au. "You have your days, as all jockeys do," Price said. "You get a bit of luck and things on your side, and you can have days like today. You can go out on five favourites and come home with no winners, it's just the way racing is and today it's been on my side." Price won the opening race with Max Fire (Star Turn-Witwatersrand, by Unfuwain) for his boss Travis Doudle, then won on 3YO Philonize (Reward for Effort-Silent Mode, by El Moxie) for trainer Dion Koch. Later, Price combined with Star of Uma (I Am Invincible-Umatilly, by Umatilla) in Race seven for the Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable, then rode Alleboom (Spirit of Boom-Be Alle Belle, by Stratum) to win race eight for the Richard and Chantelle Jolly stable.

"The quality this year’s catalogue possesses is really exciting. Our vendors are tried and true preparers, and year on year continue to offer top quality prospects, which is reflected in the outstanding racetrack results of our graduates in recent years," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "The information provided for this sale by both Magic Millions and our vendors will be second to none in giving buyers the opportunity to participate with confidence from anywhere they are situated in the world."

  • Late Golden Rose Entry For Startantes

    Tue, 21 Sep 2021

Trainer Rob Heathcote will pay the late entry fee for the Gr1 Golden Rose for his filly Startantes (Star Turn-Funtantes, by Easy Rocking), reports punters.com.au. "It's a throw at the stumps, particularly because Anamoe is probably the best 3YO in the country but you never know," Heathcote said. "It's not like we can't afford to go, she has won her last couple and has more than $200,000 in the bank so we will use a slice of that and have a crack at the big time. It is very even outside of Anamoe, that's what we saw and thought it was worth it." Startantes beat Alpine Edge (Better Than Ready-Freezethemillions, by Freeze) two starts ago, and when he ran fourth in the Gr3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude on Saturday, Heathcote decided to travel Startantes to Sydney. "Everyone has seen her, she is knee high to a grasshopper, there's not a lot of her but she has a big motor and a big heart, which takes them a long way. The 1400m doesn't hold any fears for us, I just hope the run-on horses get their chance." Startantes is currently a $26 chance for the Golden Rose and has won five of her eight starts and placed on two other occasions.

  • Ilikeit Iloveit Ready To Sizzle at Ipswich

    Wed, 15 Sep 2021

Trainer Kevin Kemp knows his 3YO filly Ilikeit Iloveit (Sizzling-Elitist, by Stratum) will make the most of the small field in Race 1 at today's Ipswich meeting, reports racingqueensland.com.au. "She's done a great job so far and we're rapt the way she's going," Kemp said. "If she races well, she might go on to something a bit better. I was very impressed with her finishing style in her two Toowoomba wins. In her last win she beat Mishani Delight (Top Echelon) who ran second to Rob Heathcote's Startantes (Star Turn) and she's gone on to win three straight. There were no excuses last time at the Gold Coast when she got beaten by a better one on the day." Ilikeit Iloveit has won two of her four starts, and ran second last start at the Gold Coast over 1400m behind Hats (Better Than Ready-Spirit of the Nile, by Encosta de Lago). Ilikeit Iloveit passed in as a yearling and is raced on lease by Kemp's wife Judith and Ulandra Bloodstock. Her Group 1-winning sire, Sizzling (Snitzel-Admirelle, by General Nediym) stands at Riverdene Stud for $6,600 on a live foal basis.

  • Vinery Stud Releases 2021 Virtual Sire Parade

    Mon, 30 Aug 2021

Presenting what is widely regarded as its most exciting stallion line-up ever, Vinery Stud has premiered its 2021 virtual sire parade. While its multiple champion shuttle stallion More Than Ready (Southern Halo) no longer calls the Hunter Valley home during the Australian spring, Vinery boasts an imposing group of horses that are in major demand for the new season starting next Wednesday. Augmenting redoubtable sire All Too Hard (already Top 5 for the 2021-22 Black Type Stallion Premiership) and his own sire Casino Prince (Flying Spur), are young guns Headwater (Exceed and Excel), Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) and Star Turn (Star Witness) whose early progeny have put them well and truly on the map. Having launched hugely popular Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Exceedance (Exceed and Excel) last year, Vinery continued to up the ante by snaring stunningly-pedigreed dual Group 1-winning 3YO Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) for his debut season in 2021. Among the most progressive stud farms in Australia, Vinery’s management has integrated its full complement of stallions into the Australian Black Type Premiership – see here.

  • Oblivion Becomes Winning Rupert's Twelfth

    Thu, 29 Jul 2021

The march of the Newgate Farm first crop sires continued Monday when Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) recorded his twelfth individual first crop winner via John Sprague's Oblivion (Winning Rupert-Mossbeat, by Mossman) who broke his maiden in impressive fashion as the race favourite at his fourth start. Having just his second run for his current trainer after finishing second the start prior, jockey Ashley Morgan jumped the gelding out quickly from the gates where he went to the lead and maintained that position throughout to score by more than two and a half lengths over 1000m at Taree. Originally sold for $280,000 to James Harron Bloodstock from the Magic Millions draft of Newgate Farm, the juvenile was recently sold via the Inglis Digital platform to his new trainer who parted ways with just $22,500, with that price now repaid in race winnings and bonuses. Currently sitting in third position on the Leading First Season Sire table for winners behind Capitalist (Written Tycoon) and Star Turn (Star Witness), Winning Rupert will stand for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) in the upcoming breeding season.

  • 20 Winners For Newgate's Capitalist

    Wed, 21 Jul 2021

Monday's Victory at Nowra by the Gary Portelli-trained 2YO colt Feudalist (Capitalist-Laetitia, by Fastnet Rock) gave his Newgate Farm-based Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon) his twentieth individual first crop winner. Having achieved 19 winners in Australia and a single winner in New Zealand, Capitalist, who currently sits in second position for prizemoney on the Leading First Season Sire table, leads Vinery Stud's Star Turn (Star Witness) on individual first crop winners. Purchased by Elite Thoroughbreds for $80,000 from the draft of Sledmere Stud at the Inglis Classic yearling sale, Feudalist is a half-brother to the Gr1-producing Fastnet Rock sire Stryker as well as the stakes placed Seeking Attention (Exceed And Excel), who is in turn the dam of South African Listed winner Buckinghampshire (Lonhro). Headlined by Gr1 Champagne Stakes winner Captivant and the Gr3 winner Kalashnikov, Capitalist has recorded 11 individual stakes-performers with his inaugural crop.

  • Smart Star Turn 2YO Nails First Win

    Wed, 23 Jun 2021

Second only to Capitalist (Written Tycoon) by the number of first season winners, Vinery Stud's Star Turn (Star Witness-Golden Delicious, by Made of Gold) – he has 13 – appears to have another very promising galloper in Western Australia, reports tbwa.net.au. Beads gave Great Southern breeders Tony and Di Marwick their latest juvenile win this season on Saturday. The youngster benefited from a rails run in the straight before putting them away like a smart horse at Belmont. He had put the writing on the wall when splitting Forever Dreaming (Cable Bay) and Vranyo (Star Turn) on June 9. Beads was backing up for a third start in as many weeks at Belmont for trainer Steve Wolfe and stable jockey Shaun McGruddy.  He tracked the speed set by Star Soprano and took advantage when the leader drifted off the fence in the Crown Perth Plate (1000m). Wolfe bought him privately from the Marwicks who operate Secret View Thoroughbreds at Elleker. They had purchased him as a foal from Torryburn Stud for $62,500 at the 2019 Magic Millions National Sale. His dam Sopraffina (Exceed And Excel) is a winning half-sister to Green Roller (TRC Strutt Stakes LR) and the dam of Ugo Foscolo (NZ 2000 Guineas Gr1). "He's an exciting horse and it's good to see him on the board!" Wolfe enthused. Star Turn is standing the 2021 breeding season at Vinery for $16,500 inc GST, payable on live foal.
