HEADWATER (AUS)(Exceed and Excel-River Dove, by Hurricane Sky)
Vinery Stud, NSW. Fee: $13,750 Live Foal Terms

Headwater Overview

Headwater is ticking all the boxes with his first 2yo crop this season and that’s ensured he will cover another full book at Vinery Stud in 2020.

There were 6 winners by June and there were none better than Wisdom of Water.  He was an unlucky fourth in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic RL in January and returned to make a serious impression at the Brisbane winter carnival.

The flashy chestnut was a brilliant five-length winner first-up at the Gold Coast and then graduated to a Gr.3 victory in the Ken Russell Classic (1200m) clocking a quicker time (1:09.17s) than Away Game in the Magic Millions Classic.

Wisdom of Water was subsequently transferred to trainer Mick Price in Melbourne and will be set to emulate Vinery sire Exceedance in the Gr.1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on October 31.

“Headwater has started his career off very well and already has what looks like a topliner in Wisdom Of Water,” Vinery General Manager Peter Orton said.  “When you consider he has more juvenile winners than some of the higher priced stallions around the country you have to think the future for him is bright.”

Headwater is an impeccable type and retired sound to Vinery. He fetched $500,000 as a yearling and owns a potent pedigree that combines Champion sire Exceed And Excel and Oakleigh Plate Gr.1 winner River Dove.

As a 2yo, Headwater won a Silver Slipper Gr.2 at Rosehill so it wasn’t unexpected when Wisdom of Water and stakes-placed Be Water My Friend were prominent at the Brisbane winter carnival.  Speedy fillies Aquagirl (Melbourne) and Mileva (Adelaide) also saluted in the Southern States to elevate Headwater into a Top 5 spot on the Australian first-season premiership.

Vinery Stud stands Headwater for a ‘Payment on Live Foal’ service fee of $13,750 (inc GST).

  • Strong International Demand for NZB 2YOs

    Thu, 19 Nov 2020

NZB’s Ready to Run Sale cemented its leading position in the 2YO sale market with strong international and domestic buying benches represented on the opening day of the 2020 Sale. Day 1 saw New Zealand Bloodstock unveil its new online bidding platform, with the robust technology proving successful after a strong day of international purchases secured. Managing Director Andrew Seabrook was thrilled with the reception of NZB’s new digital platform. “We were cautiously optimistic heading into today, although the response to our online bidding platform has exceeded our expectations; 45 percent of today’s total turnover was secured from our international buyers using the platform, with Hong Kong leading the way and strong participation from Australia and Macau,” he said. The top lot of Day One was purchased by Graham Richardson on behalf of a Hong Kong client in Lot 54, a Sacred Falls colt out of Savabeel Star for $525,000 from Riversley Park. Richardson also bought Lot 32, a colt by Vinery Stud’s Headwater out of Raischek for $300,000 from Regal Farm. Travel restrictions had little impact on the activity of NZB’s international clients, with dynamic duo Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young purchasing the second top lot of the day. They secured Lot 3, a Savabeel colt out of On Broadway for $400,000 from Ohukia Lodge. Busuttin and Young purchased four lots in total on day one of the Sale, including Lot 95, a Dundeel colt out of Tralee Chorus for $220,000 from Ohukia Lodge. The third top lot of the day was secured by New Zealand owner Gary Harding, a Not a Single Doubt colt out of O'Naturelle (Lot 2) for $320,000 from Jamieson Park.

  • Freshman Sires Face Off at Randwick

    Fri, 16 Oct 2020

On a raceday awash in magnificant spring bloodstock, Saturday's Royal Randwick meeting will see two colts on debut face off in a proxy battle for their exciting young freshman sires in the Victory Vein Plate. By Capitalist, and Star Turn, respectively, the debutants each cost $550,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. Capitvant (Capitalist) was sold by Ashleigh Thoroughbreds. Out of a sister to the dam of Gr1 New Zealand Derby winner Crown Prosecutor, he is from the immediate family of Vinery's young boom sire Headwater. Montana Flash (Star Turn) is a half-brother to two winners from a family that's produced smart juvenile types. He was sold by Glenlogan Park.  Both 2YOs have won their only trials to date but will face strong opposition in the form of another Capitalist juvenile, Kalashnikov. Placed on debut he is expected to improve from the experience and is favourite.

  • Vinery Poised for a Huge Season

    Fri, 10 Jul 2020

Like a footy team that’s been building towards the future, Vinery Stud is starting to see the fruits of their labour over the past few years, and in 2020 they head towards the stud season with a gun crop of six stallions. Even without the considerable influence of champion sire More Than Ready – finally having a break after setting a record of consecutive trans hemisphere shuttles – Vinery’s fire-power this year is as imposing as any for a long time. In addition to highly proven stallions Casino Prince and his star son All Too Hard, Vinery boasts boom freshmen Headwater and Press Statement, backed up by ultra-commercial Star Turn whose first 2YOs are set to hit the track in the Spring. The final Vinery offering for 2020 is the massively exciting Exceedance, the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner whose acceleration and sectionals put him amongst vaunted company. Click on the image below for an in-depth preview of Vinery’s 2020 stallions.

  • Vinery Freshman Heading in Promising Direction

    Thu, 2 Jul 2020

The rapid rise of exciting Exceed and Excel sire-son Headwater with his first crop of 2YOs will be providing Vinery Stud with plenty to be excited about. Headwater’s $13,750 fee should have breeders lining up as the new breeding season approaches. Currently joint third on the First Crop Sires list by individual winners following Wednesday’s victory by Gunnamatta, Headwater’s eight juvenile winners to date include stakes-performers Be Water My Friend and Wisdom of Water; the latter won the Gr3 Ken Russell Memorial Handicap in a hand canter (see below) after finishing fourth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Out of Gr1 Oakleigh Plate heroine River Dove from a superb family that includes Riverdene Stud’s 2020 freshman sire McLaren (bred on an identical cross), Headwater was a gun 2YO himself, winning the Gr2 Silver Slipper and placing in the Gr2 Todman Stakes. Training on as a 3YO where he again won at stakes-level, Headwater finished fourth in the Gr1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley.

  • Fradd Gives Wisdom of Water Thumbs Up

    Tue, 19 May 2020

Leading Queensland jockey Robbie Fradd, who has ridden with success internationally, has given his imprimatur ahead of boom 2YO colt Wisdom of Water's pending challenge in Saturday's Gr1 JJ Atkins Stakes (shortened to 1400m this year) at Eagle Farm. Having done the steering in last Saturday's demolition job dished out by the son of Headwater in the Gold Coast's Gr3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic, Fradd is confident the now 50-percent Aquis-owned chestnut is more than up to the task. He told AAP, "We might need to teach him to settle a little bit better as the JJ Atkins will be a high-pressure race and you won't get it too easy in front. But he has come from behind before. He will be third-up which means he should be ready to settle." Fradd enthused, "I think he's a pretty serious horse. He is a colt and still learning his trade but he is getting there." If that's true, then good luck to his opposition when he does get there which could, conceivably, be in a race like the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.

    Thu, 7 May 2020

The connections of just retired colt McLaren knew from the get-go just how precocious the gifted juvenile was. By Exceed and Excel, whose star continues to rise courtesy of a recent production line of 3YO Gr1 sprinters like Exceedance, Microphone, Bivouac and Standout, McLaren was robbed of the chance to show his true talent. Following his Gr3 Canonbury Stakes debut win, jockey James McDonald remarked: “He’s got that much speed, he doesn’t know how to harness it yet. That’s the exciting thing. Once he does learn to harness it, he is going to be a very good horse because it’s all on raw ability at the moment. I love his acceleration. He has a great will to win. He is a real racehorse and it will take him a long way.” Co-trainer Peter Snowden said after the race. “He is an exciting colt. What he does at home is really, really good. I only let him go once and that was enough for me. I saw what he could do.’’ Bought by Newgate Farm managing director Henry Field for his ownership group, Field recalls: “He’s an incredibly athletic type. Rangy, well-angled, big but well put together and you could see how he was going to take shape. He was a colt we just had to have.” The well-named McLaren was produced by a half-sister to the internationally performed Gr1 sprinters First Command (by Commands) and Oneworld (by Danehill Dancer), and hails from the family of Gr1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove, dam of Gr2 Silver Slipper winner Headwater.

  • Remaining Vinery Quartet Offer Significant Value

    Wed, 6 May 2020

Outside of Exceedance and All Too Hard (see above items), Vinery’s other quartet of stallions offers a combination of those starting to hit their straps on the track and in the sales ring, and an incredibly proven stallion:

    • Star Turn ($16,500) arrived with a bang courtesy of his yearlings who achieved over 10 times covering fee at the Magic Millions. He had 14 yearlings sell for six-figures in 2020 and they were targeted by our leading trainers, including his top priced colt selling for $550,000 to the bid of Team Hawks. Star Turn won in November of his juvenile season before returning to defeat Golden Slipper winner Capitalist in the Gr3 San Domenico Stakes. Sent to Melbourne for the spring carnival, he showed another brilliant burst of acceleration to defeat older horses at weight-for-age in the Gr2 Schillaci Stakes.
    • Press Statement ($13,750) was the only colt of his generation to win a Gr1 at two and three and he’s on track for a Gr1 stud career. Chris Waller trained Press Statement to complete the J J Atkins Stakes – Caulfield Guineas double and they have a front-line chance in this year’s first leg with promising colt and dual-city winner Spokesman. Ciaron Maher & David Eustace also train his first-crop winners Incredulous Dream and Major Murphy while John O’Shea has the promising filly Newsreader, who will be set for the Woodlands Stakes LR at Rosehill later this month.
    • Headwater ($13,750) has a potent pedigree, combining Champion sire Exceed And Excel and Oakleigh Plate Gr1 winner River Dove. As a 2YO Headwater won a Gr2 Silver Slipper Gr2 at Rosehill so it’s not surprising that he has precocious first-crop winners like Wisdom of Water, Aquagirl and Mileva, and more juvenile winners than some other high-priced stallions. Wisdom of Water is a flying machine and was an unlucky fourth in the $2 million RL Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January. He returned recently with an impressive 5-length victory and is on a path to the Gr1 J J Atkins Stakes.
    • Casino Prince ($5,500) is the perfect stallion for breeders wanting to retain to race and you won’t get any arguments at such an amazing fee. All Too Hard was one of two Gr1 winners from his first crop and there could be another at the Brisbane winter carnival if Baccarat Baby takes her place in the Stradbroke Hcp (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 6.  Casino Prince is a prolific winner-getter and he props up the Vinery roster with career stats of 360 individual winners at an incredible 71% strike-rate.
  • Silver Slipper Debutant Kept Safe

    Fri, 21 Feb 2020

In the past eight years, one of Sydney's key Golden Slipper lead-ups, the Gr2 Silver Slipper has been won by these juveniles: Pierro, Sweet Idea, Mossfun, Headwater, Astern, She Will Reign, Sunlight and Time To Reign. Considering that Estijaab, runner-up behind Sunlight, subsequently won the Golden Slipper as did She Will Reign, Mossfun and Pierro, it's clearly not a race to which one sends a boy to do a man's job. That's why there's a lot of interest in North Pacific, a Team Hawkes entrant who is making his debut against vaunted opposition. The $800,000 sale-topper purchased by Orbis Bloodstock from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the 2019 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, North Pacific is by boom sire Brazen Beau from the family of 4-time Gr1 winner Metal Bender. In his only trial he was a hard-held runner-up behind fellow Silver Slipper runner Farnan where he looked to have plenty in reserve. The market is treading very warily with the first starter, keeping him safe at around $8.00 on the second line of betting behind odds-on chance Celsabeel who is attempting to qualify for the Golden Slipper herself.

  • All Too Easy For Classic Buyers

    Mon, 10 Feb 2020

The well-documented exploits of Queensland cult 3YO Alligator Blood (All Too Hard-Lake Superior, by Encosta de Lago) have left no doubt that Vinery Stud’s champion 3YO All Too Hard is a stallion capable of throwing elite racehorses. Sitting just on the cusp of the Top 10 Australian General Stallions, Black Caviar’s half-brother All Too Hard is already the sire of 30 individual stakes-performers, of which six have achieved at Gr1 level. At Inglis Classic between Sunday and Tuesday, there are 16 yearlings by All Too Hard for sale, with Vinery’s 25-strong draft responsible for a half dozen of those. With the exception of four yearlings (by Flying Artie, Smart Missile, Teofilo and Your Song) the balance of Vinery’s consignment are by their own high profile stallions that include More Than Ready, Headwater, Press Statement, Star Turn and Casino Prince. • Headwater Colt Could Emulate Houtzen

    Mon, 6 Jan 2020

Exciting juvenile colt Wisdom of Water, by Vinery Stud's promising first crop sire Headwater (Exceed and Excel-River Dove, by Hurricane Sky), is a chance to emulate his former stablemate Houtzen when he backs up in next week's $2 million The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) after an impressive win in Saturday's $125,000 Aquis Gold Nugget (1100m). A $70,000 buy for connections by Blandford Bloodstock from the Eureka Stud draft last year, Headwater's first winner Wisdom of Water appreciated taking a sit in the juvenile race, before finishing strongly under Robbie Fradd for a quality win. Houtzen won the 2YO Classic a week after booking her place in the field with a win at the same course in her final lead up run. It's a double that's been completed in four of the last five years - Le Chef, Sunlight and Exhilarates are the others, so it certainly wouldn't lack precedented if the Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Wisdom of Water is up to the task. Headwater is represented at this week's Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale with six yearlings.

  • NZB RTR Press Statement Colt Fetches $420K

    Thu, 21 Nov 2019

In early action at Wednesday’s opening session of the 2019 NZB Ready to Run Sale of 2YOs, a colt by Vinery Stud’s freshman stallion Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) sold for $420,000 after spirited bidding. Opening at a $100,000 bid, the well put together 2YO had plenty to recommend him aside from his sire who won Gr1 races as a 2YO and 3YO. He is a grandson of the Bart Cummings-trained multiple champion mare Let’s Elope, whose major victories included the Gr1 quartet of the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Mackinnon Stakes and Australian Cup. Also placed in two US Gr1 races, Let’s Elope has left quality stock in her wake, and Lot 9 is no exception for the family, trialling stylishly in a professional 10.86 sec. Consigned by Ohukia Lodge, the winning bid fell to Hong Kong trainer Dennis Yip. Later in the first session, another Vinery freshman stallion was also responsible for a $420,000 sale when Headwater's colt out of Red Duchez was knocked down to Hong Kong's Mr P. Koo.

The early TAB favourite is Dundeel colt It’s A Deel, trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, who paid $150,000 for him at Easter from the Arrowfield Stud draft. Other stallions represented include Snitzel, Written Tycoon, Starspangledbanner, Brazen Beau, Hinchinbrook, Nicconi, Foxwedge, All Too Hard and Sizzling, as well as first season sires Bull Point, Headwater and Pride of Dubai. • NZB 2YO Breeze Ups Concluded at Te Rapa

    Wed, 23 Oct 2019

Day-2 (Tuesday) saw the final 181 juveniles sprint down the straight of Te Rapa Racecourse, concluding the NZB Ready to Run Sale Breeze Ups. Following on from Monday’s Dead 5 track conditions, the rail was moved in 4 metres and the track remained a Dead 6 throughout the day. A smart Breeze Up came from Heat 108, which included Kilmore Farm's Per Incanto gelding (Lot 222) from a successful black type family breezing up in 10.92. Following closely was a Dundeel colt (Lot 217) galloping in 10.93 from the draft of Phoenix Park.. Lot 275 is a Tavistock colt out of Gr1-winning mare Banchee. This colt breezed up in 10.46 and is closely related to Champion filly Katie Lee. Continuing the trend was Lot 26 by Showcasing out of stakes-winning mare Lamington Vegas. This colt breezed in at 10.49. Ohaupo-based Riversley Park presented the quickest performers on Day 2 in Heat 102, after a gelding by Headwater (Lot 144) breezed up at a time of 10.30. Following closely behind was Lot 128, a colt by Per Incanto out of stakes-winning mare Princess Annaliese in 10.33. The second fastest duo was Heat 191 from the Charma Heights draft. Lot 158 is a colt by Pour Moi out of Safari Sunset, breezing up in 10.45. Another quick run (Lot 315) was by a Falkirk colt who breezed up in 10.47. NZB’s Bloodstock Sales Manager Danny Rolston was pleased with the outcome across the two days of Breeze Ups. “The quality of two-year-olds that breezed up over the past two days has been outstanding and it was great to see an impressive representation of both New Zealand and international sires on the track. Full credit goes to the vendors and jockeys for presenting and breezing their horses up in a professional manner.”

  • A Day To Remember for Inglis Vendors

    Wed, 23 Oct 2019

Damian Lane of Glenvale Park - which he runs with his father-in-law Bob Law – had a day to remember at Tuesday’s Inglis Ready2Race Sale. Not only did he offer the second-top lot (a Deep Field x Prinny’s Girl colt which sold to Horse Feng Bloodstock for $320,000, a horse Lane purchased for just $21,000 at Scone in May) but he also secured $140,000 for a Real Impact x Madison park colt to Casper Fownes, which was originally a $25,000 Classic Yearling Sale buy. “It’s been phenomenal, those two results, that doesn’t even sound right,’’ a shocked Lane said. “This is huge for us. That type of money, it’s unheard of to be honest.” Fellow vendor Blake Ryan had similarly great results, including a Real Impact x Only Roses colt which sold to Andrew Williams Bloodstock for $310,000, making it the day’s third-top lot, as well as a Headwater colt which sold for $240,000. “This is the best day of my life, my working life, although it’s pretty close to the best day ever,” gushed Ryan. “It’s 4-5 years in the making, it’s very satisfying. I can reinvest in confidence now at next year’s Classic Sale.’’

  • Vinery Sire Heading In The Right Direction

    Thu, 17 Oct 2019

Young Vinery stallion Headwater (Exceed and Excel-River Dove, by Hurricane Sky), whose yearlings were very popular earlier this year, achieved his best result at public auction when the colt from Prison Rules made $200,000 at the Magic Millions 2YO Sale on the Gold Coast. Headwater's first-crop colt was sold by Symphony Lodge to Chinese owner Gu Tao. He's the first foal from unraced Onemorenomore mare Prison Rules.  Second-dam No Evidence Needed (Shamardal) was a Group winner at Flemington (Let's Elope Stakes) and Rosehill (Southern Cross Stakes). "We bought him from the Classic Sale for $11,000 and there was plenty of interest from local and international buyers here," Symphony Lodge owner Matthew Park said. "Whenever we brought him out of the box, other buyers would walk up and want to inspect him, too. He's a cracking individual and ticks all the boxes. The new owners told me he will be set for the first running of a 2YO race in China next year." Headwater completed a very successful sale finishing in the Top 5 for aggregate ($420,000) and average ($105,000). The Gr2-winning son of Exceed And Excel is standing at Vinery for a $16,500 (inc GST) service fee.
